An Office 365 tutorial by Peter Kalmström

Microsoft Visio is a diagramming and vector graphics application that helps you create professional diagrams that are linked to data and updated when data changes.
Visio is part of the Microsoft Office family, but it is not included in the basic Office 365 packages. You have to pay an extra fee to use it regularly, but you can include Visio in your free trial and see if it is useful to you.
NOTE: It is no longer possible to try Visio as described below. This article will be removed as soon as Office Online from Scratch is updated. By keeping the article for now, we can reach readers of the current version.
In the demo below Peter Kalmström, kalmstrom.com CEO and Systems Designer, shows how to add Visio Plan 2 to an Office 365 trial. (There is also a Plan 1 that gives Visio Online but not the desktop application.) The process is the same if you are already subscribing to Office 365 and want to try Visio.
Peter shows how to give one user access to Visio via 'Active users', but 'Active users' also gives a bulk licensing option. Furthermore, a wizard for adding user licenses is shown in the Office 365 Admin center after the Visio trial has been set up. These methods are described in Peter's book Office 365 from Scratch.

Process for adding Visio to Office 365

  1. Click on the App Launcher button and then on 'Admin' to open the Office 365 admin center.
  2. In the left pane, select 'Billing' and then 'Purchase services'.
  3. Find Visio Plan 2 in the list of services.
  4. Click on the trial link.
  5. Click on 'Try now'.
  6. Click on 'Continue'.
  7. Select 'Users' and then 'Active users' in the left hand pane of the Office 365 Admin center.
  8. Select the users to whom you want to assign the Visio subscription.
  9. Edit the Product licenses and enable Visio.
Now each user who has been assigned Visio can install the application via his/her account >Install status or via office.com.

  3. Jan 02, 2016 Click on Subscriptions and make sure that Visio is shown there (this is the O365 Subscription that is assigned and NOT a standalone). Next click on Settings. You will see an option for INSTALL SOFTWARE. Click that and then choose Visio (for me it is the third item down on the left hand side of the screen.

I have an O365 subscription but cannot figure out how to add Visio 2019 to it. I did find Visio Online but it doesn't recognize my O365 account and says I have to create a new one. I don't want to mange independent accounts like that, so I'm hoping there's a way to add it to my existing subscription. Visio must be purchased separately, either through a Visio subscription (Visio Plan 1 or Visio Plan 2) or non-subscription version (Visio Standard or Visio Professional). However, Visio files are available to view and comment—but not edit—online for all Microsoft 365 commercial subscription plans that include Office for the web.
